We’re releasing several minor community-requested enhancements to the Azure Toolkit for Eclipse , following on from our major release in March, which included the ability to run the Azure Toolkit for Eclipse on Mac and Linux, and generate Ant scripts from a deployment project that can be run outside of Eclipse, on any Apache Ant-enabled machine.
Easy installs and updates, and full access to source code
You can install the toolkit by selecting Help > Install new software inside Eclipse, or drag and drop the Toolkit directly from the Eclipse Marketplace to your Eclipse Workspace. Also, all of the code is open source and available on GitHub.
If you have an older version of the Toolkit installed, selecting Help > Check for Updates provides the option to install updates of the toolkit and related packages:
Here are the highlights of the May 2015 release:
- Support for Maven projects - Maven projects can now be deployed to Azure
- Improved server selection UI - simplifies selection of servers on non-Windows operating systems
- Upgrade deployment instead of republish – Redeployment performance improvements and less interruption on your application servers.
- Version 2.6 of the Azure SDK - is now the latest prerequisite for the toolkit to be installed on Windows. (Note this is not needed on non-Windows OSs).
- Support for the latest Zulu OpenJDK v8 (update 40)
Support for Maven projects
Projects based on Maven can now be deployed to Azure using the Toolkit, and you can easily integrate features of the Azure SDK for Java via the Eclipse UI, including, for example, features like automatic server telemetry via the Application Insights SDK for Java. These features are enabled via the Package for Azure Libraries for Java, which is automatically downloaded when you install the Toolkit.
Improved server selection UI
When selecting an App Server, the type of app Server is now selected first, then you can fill in the details of where the server’s source package will come from, as illustrated here:
And if you prefer to have the App server loaded directly form Azure without having to manage your own server packages locally, via a URL or in an Azure Storage account, you can select one of our preconfigured, 3rd party Azure-stored App server images here:
Deployment upgrade instead of republish
If you're deploying an update to a project that is already live, the toolkit now uses Azure’s upgrade deployment functionality instead of shutting down the previous deployment and redeploying from scratch, as it did in the past. This enables your cloud service to run without interruption whenever possible, helping achieve high availability even during a redeployment.
