Today I would like to draw your attention to Salt, an infrastructure management tool that can be used to manage Azure resources. Salt delivers a dynamic communication bus for infrastructures for orchestration, remote execution, configuration management and other tasks.
Salt is a configuration management system, capable of maintaining remote nodes in defined states (for example, ensuring that specific packages are installed and specific services are running). It is also a distributed remote execution system that can execute commands and query data on remote nodes, either individually or by arbitrary selection criteria
Salt Enterprise has received several awards, with its most recent accolade being: InfoWorld.com 2014 Technology of the Year.
For Microsoft Azure users, Salt can manage Azure resources using the included Azure cloud module. With the Salt Azure module, developers can deploy, inspect and destroy virtual machines, and then employ the full power of Salt to manage an Azure infrastructure and virtual machine configuration. Those who are exploring DevOps options need to take. A great place to start is the projects excellent documentation.
As always, we would like to hear about your experiences with open source tools like Salt. Please leave us a comment if there is something you would like to share.
